We’ve been wanting to do this for ages but health problems, work and more health problems got in the way! Finally we have some time and our Guerrillas Nutritionist Robyn from Flourish Health will be joining in to help answer questions.

So for Coeliac Awareness Week we’d like to end on a high by sparking debate on Coeliac Disease and busting some myths. Not all Coeliacs have bloating or bowel problems. It’s actually generally acknowledged as only 1 in 7 that do. And as we know not all Coeliacs feel better on a GF diet…

However, a lot of people are diagnosed with IBS or Endometriosis or Thyroid problems when they also hav Coeliac Disease which isn’t detected for ages. The average length of time for Coeliac Disease diagnose per person is 13 yrs. We’d like to change that and help people become more aware of the symptoms which don’t always present as stomach pain but can be pelvic pain, skin problems, mood swings, extreme fatigue, joint and muscle pains, depression etc.

So how does it work?

This Saturday from 4-5ish we’ll be running a live Tweet chat on ‘Beyond the gut’ from our twitter account T: gfguerrillas

What’s it about?

We’ll be answering your key questions about Coeliac disease beyond the small bowel & villi damage. After all we all know that not every Coeliac has bowel problems. Only 1 in 7 do. Many of us have skin issues, fatigue, bone problems, infertility and other auto-immune diseases. There’s also the social problems and mental health issues surrounding being diagnosed with Coeliac Disease. So for our twitter chat we’ll be focusing on issues beyond the small bowel problems.

We’d love your input

We know that many of you are fed up feeling ill even on a strict Gluten Free diet. Some of you have lots of questions that health professionals don’t answer for you. Many of you find sites like ours the best for sharing tips and experiences.

Comment below & tell us what questions you’d like ‘Beyond the gut’
i.e. when will I feel better, why do I have skin problems, what can I do to improve my bone health, are there any key vitamins and minerals I should take for my immune system etc etc. Or tweet us your comments @gfguerrillas

We look forward to your questions

Feel free to spread the word. Or if you’re a shy type just search #CoeliacChat on twitter on Saturday and follow the discussion as it happens!  Follow it here

Coeliac Awareness Week - UK - 13 to 19 May 2013
We’re keen to ensure undiagnosed people with Coeliac Disease are tested. However, many Coeliac societies focus on the stereotypical symptoms, diarrhoea, stomach pains, bloating and so on.  Many Coeliacs (us included) had none of these symptoms. So our aim this year, is to raise awareness of the variety of different symptoms and conditions that can be caused by Coeliac Disease.
If you’d also like more people to get screened for Coeliac Disease then pass on this message by sharing it on Twitter & Facebook. Remember to remind people that they need to keep eating gluten before the blood test and endoscopy.
Why should it take 13 yrs+ for someone to get an official diagnosis with Coeliac Disease?  Let’s change that and spread the word. And remember if you yourself have Coeliac Disease then encourage your close relatives to get tested as there’s a 1 in 10 chance they also have it.
Don’t forget the majority of people don’t have obvious stomach problems with Coeliac Disease. So spread the word people!

What Coeliac Check Ups do you get?

We know from our previous polls that a large percentage of our forum members don’t have any regular Coeliac health checks after diagnosis, Zilch - Nadda - nothing!  The emphasis on NICE Guidelines for Coeliac Disease in the UK is on diagnosis not after care.

So our new multiple choice poll seeks to find out what checks you or your child actually have?

How were you diagnosed as a Coeliac?

We asked our forum members, ‘How were you or your child diagnosed with Coeliac Disease?’. We had a great response with over 180 members responding. However, we were surprised by the results.

  • Only 50% of respondees were diagnosed via anti-body blood test & endoscopy biospy
  • Yet nearly 10% had self diagnosed themselves

Was this relatively high figure for self diagnosis due to poor help from health professionals?  With it taking over 10 yrs plus on average for someone with Coeliac Disease to be diagnosed it is understandable that some people get fed up of seeking medical help and just jump on the gluten free diet themselves.

Yet the danger is they may be doing so when they don’t actually have Coeliac Disease and they miss out on getting a proper diagnosis for what maybe another health issue entirely. After all a gluten free diet isn’t healthy for non-Coeliacs or those without other auto-immune conditions despite all the media hype about celebrities on the diet.  After all as we Coeliacs know going gluten free means we have to often take extra supplements like Folic Acid, B12, Vitamin D, Niacin, Thiamine,Calcium and Iron, as we no longer eat mainstream gluten free food that is often fortified with these.

Your thoughts

  • What do you make of the results?
  • Did they surprise you?
  • Do they mirror your experience?

Let us know how you were diagnosed and if you think our poll reflects your experience.

Our Review: The Allergy and Free From Show Liverpool 27 - 28 October 2012

Our roving Guerrilla reporters spotted some great new products at the Allergy and Free From food show in Liverpool recently.  It was the first time the show had ventured out of London so we sent our top reporters along and they spied some new producers that weren’t at the London Allergy show this year.

We also had great feedback about the show from you - our Gluten Free Guerrilla fans.  So we’d like to say a BIG THANK YOU for all your Twitter and Facebook pictures of your favourite stalls.  As promised we’ve included your comments and pictures in our review.

Just in case you couldn’t make it to the Allergy and Free From Show in Liverpool  here’s our pick of the best gluten free products to watch out for over the next few months…

Amy’s Kitchen

W: Amy’s Kitchen UK website

T:  @AmysKitchenUK

[Amy’s Kitchen meals]

Comments

Amy’s Kitchen creates great ready meals for Coeliacs in a hurry. We always have a few in our freezer and they’ve saved the day many a time when you don’t have the energy to create your own packed lunch or are dashing off to stay with a friend. Our favourite is the vegetable lasagna and macaroni cheese (which we used to hate pre-CD).  So they really do do great meals!

How to get you paws on them

Look out for them in Whole Food’s frozen section and many other larger high street supermarkets.

CELIA Czech Gluten Free Lager

W  CELIA lager website

T   @CELIAlager

[The CELIA lager lads]

Comments

CELIA are the new kids on the block when it comes to gluten free lager.  Yet you wouldn’t know it, as their Czech lager tastes as good as any you’d remember
pre-coeliac diagnosis.  Their website says their lager is,

Brewed in Prague, it mixes the proud brewing heritage of the Czech Republic with an innovative new brewing technique to produce a great tasting Gluten Free lager.

We couldn’t agree more, it tastes divine. Here’s a picture from our roving Guerrilla Mick, who is something of a gluten free beer connoisseur. Here’s his picture of CELIA ready to quaff it at home after a busy week.

Note - it tastes even better in a professional beer glass - see our Mick is a pro at this beer drinking malarky!

[Mick’s gluten free beer preparation]

Guerrilla Mick’s verdict is,

‘As a Coeliac I always feel I  am missing out - will I ever taste a Czech beer that I used to love like Budvar or Staropramen?  Well the good news is that CELIA lager hits the spot and fills that gap!  No more feeling left out!’

How to get your paws on it

Currently Celia Gluten Free lager is only available from:

An award winning traditional fish restaurant in South East London, (every Tuesday it’s gluten free).

[Deleted - new suppliers coming soon]

CELIA lager are definitely ones to watch and we hope to see them in a supermarket near you very soon!   If you want to as well then get emailing your supermarket to request them to stock it.  Or perhaps if enough of us Tweet Virgin {@VirginTrains] & East Coast (@eastcoastuk) we may see it on a train very soon ?!

Daura Gluten Free Beer

W  Estrella Damm website for Daura

T  @DauraTeamUK

Comments

We’ve long been big fans of Daura GF beer.  Their beer is from Barcelona in Spain and somehow with every sip it captures a memory of your perfect Spanish holiday.  So if you’ve not tried it yet you are missing out!  Currently their Gluten Free beer is available in ASDA, Waitrose, Morrisons and Sainsbury’s (look out for the crossed grain symbol on the bottles, don’t mistake the gluten version of it).

The great news is that Daura Gluten Free Beer is on special offer at many supermarkets in the run up to Christmas so get stocking up now!

  • Asda in December £6.26 instead of £7.38 for a 4 pack
  • Morrisons in November £6.28 instead of £7.40 a 4 pack
(find it in the normal beer aisle in Morrisons)

The Daura team have been working hard to get it into more bars and restaurants and it’s currently available in La Tasca, the chain that does gluten free tapas.  If you’d love to see it in your local bar or restaurant ask your local place to stock it for you.  In taste tests we’ve done we’ve friends the beer has been a huge hit with non-Coeliacs and Coeliacs alike!

Fria Gluten Free Food

W: Fria Gluten Free Food Website

T:  @FriaGlutenFree

We’ve long been fans of Fria and their tasty gluten free products since the early days when they were available within the John Lewis Food Hall on Oxford Street. First there was ABBA and now these Swedes bring us great tasting frozen gluten free food from high fibre bread to great tasting chocolate cake – all of which is gluten free and dairy free!

Comments

Fria’s products are so good they won the Free From Food Award best bread category this year with their Grova Dark seeded sliced loaf,

‘Lovely nutty texture and malty flavour – a good alternative to granary.’

So said the Freedom Food Judges, they also liked the caraway seeds and thought it would make excellent sandwich bread.

We recommend you try their Grov Mini Baguettes (with seeds and high in fibre) which is great with soup.  Also try their Kladdakaka Chocolate cake – which is billed as a chocolate brownie. But we’d say it’s much more like a chocolate torte, it’s great heated up for 30 seconds in the microwave and served with fruit and ice cream.  We don’t have a sweet toothed coeliac amongst us but that cake hits the spot every time as it’s subtle and chocolate tasting without being cloying or too sweet or heavy. A real hit at parties in the Gluten Free Guerrillas treehouse ! Perfect for seasonal celebrations like Thanksgiving or Christmas.

[The Curious Baker tweeted us that they also loved Fria products]

Freedom Deli

W Freedom Deli Website

T @freedomdeli

[The Curious Baker also loved Freedom deli as do we]

We’ve always wondered why no-one had seized the gap in the gluten free food market and created tasty and healthy gluten free meals.

Comments

Well, Freedom Deli have seized that gap in the market. They have a range of tasty gluten free ready meals. The Freedom range is handmade and all of it is gluten and wheat free and made with 100% natural ingredients.  They also use locally sources ingredients with no artificial colours, flavours or preservatives.

Nice to know some gluten free producers have an eye on sustainability and healthy eating unlike so many of the supermarket’s ‘Free From’ aisles packed with fat, salt and sugar.  So look out for Freedom Deli products.

How to get your paws on them

Their website says,

The Freedom range of meals are available from our online store and in various independent retailers. A selection of our products are now also available in Ocado and other retailers soon so we will update this page regularly to let you know. If you run an independent outlet or restaurant and would like to stock the range please contact us or your wholesale supplier.

Yet again Ocado leads the pack on stocking up and coming gluten free products, where they retail at around £4.45 a meal. Gold star to Ocado!

So you know what to do Guerrillas - get emailing your supermarket and tell them you want to see them stocking Freedom Deli products soon!

GoodnessDirect Online Supermarket

W GoodnessDirect website

T  @goodnessdirect

[Our roving Guerrilla reporter is also a mean photographer, Goodness Direct’s stall]

Comments:

GoodnessDirect leads the way in the widest range of Free From foods available from their online supermarket.  It really is a one stop shop for any Free From products. So if you’re ever stuck on how to cater for a guest with allergies or intolerances then hunt down some great products on Goodness Direct.

We’re pleased to see they have recently added one of our favourite brands, Fria Gluten Free frozen products from Sweden. So do place an order and enjoy Fria’s GF and DF products.  Our favourites are the chocolate cake, chocolate muffins, cinnamon rolls and the Grov rolls (great for making your own garlic bread).

Isabel’s Cuisine

W Isabel’s Cuisine website

T @IsabelsCuisine

[Lovely Isabel and some of her fab products, watch out the dough balls are very addictive]

Comments

We love Isabel’s dough balls and pizza mixes.  She’s recently introduced more items e.g. Yorkshire pudding and batter mix.  Sadly Waitrose recently de-listed them, more fool them!

How to get your paws on them

So spend your money with retailers that are supporting great small gluten free businesses instead like ASDA supermarkets and Ocado online.

If you’d like to see more supermarkets stocking Isabel’s unique and great tasting gluten free products then sign her petition online here.

Sweet Mandarin Sauces

W Sweet Mandarin Website

T  @SweetMandarins

[The Sweet Mandarin stall, great friendly team]

Comments

Manchester based twins Helen and Lisa have created some epic tasting gluten free dipping sauces and we mean epic!   You can choose from BBQ, Sweet Chilli or Sweet and Sour.  They taste fab and it’s great to know their Gluten free sauces are all made without nasty MSG, artificial colours or flavourings!  Hunt them down and beg your supermarket to stock them.  They really will be a hit with everyone.

[Guerrilla Jan gives Sweet Mandarin her seal of approval!]

Coming to a Sainsbury’s near you before the end of November! They’ll also be available in Selfridges London and Manchester soon.  Keep your eyes peeled!

As our Guerrilla Jan says,

How to get your paws on them

  • Look out for them in all four Win Yip stores priced around £2.80

You can also buy a set of 3 of their dipping sauces directly from their website – a great idea for a Christmas present for any Coeliacs or foodie lovers.

Yes! You Can Bread

W http://www.robertsbakery.co.uk/yesyoucan/

[Yes! You can low fat Gluten Free brown and white bread]

We tried Yes! You Can gluten free bread a while ago and haven’t managed to fit in a full blog about it.  So here’s our summary for you.   Did you find that when you went gluten free you started putting on weight?  Yep so did we.  We couldn’t work out why until we looked at our GF bread and saw that some were 2.5g per slice so that’s 5g before you’ve added any spread or sandwich fillings!  Depressing stuff.

Comments

The great thing about Yes! You Can GF bread is that it is lower in fat than other high street brands and it tastes great without falling apart.  The holy grail for many Coeliacs is finding bread that tastes like their pre-diagnosis days.  Well this brown and white bread did just that. We also found it was one of the best breads to toast from fresh.

The philosophy behind Yes! You Can bread is simple,

‘Why compromise?  Just because you’re eating gluten free bakery products we don’t think you should have to forgo the delicious taste and texture of fresh, well baked bread.  That’s why we have developed the Yes! You Can range – gluten, wheat and dairy free, but tasting just the way bread should!’

How to get your paws on them

You can buy Yes! You Can bread for around £2.95 (for a 600g loaf) at 700 Tesco stores and many Co-Op supermarkets around the UK.

Pizza Hut UK launch a Gluten Free pizza..or do they?

Guerrillas,

Do you have fond memories of eating at Pizza Hut before you were diagnosed a Coeliac? We do. We remember having a great 13th birthday party there and drinking lots of diet coke and delighting in ‘eating out’ and having pizza.

COELIAC UK CHARITY:

So we were pleased to learn in the Coeliac UK e-newsletter that charity for coeliacs (which required paid membership) stated:

Wow. Imagine - another chain that actually caters for coeliacs. What great news!  Also great for families and kids which are Pizza Hut’s target market. As it’s often hard to find gluten free places that are also family friendly.

QUESTIONS:

But then we got thinking..silly Guerrillas..sometimes we over-think, especially if we haven’t eaten enough bananas. We wondered..well if Coeliac UK have worked in partnership with Pizza Hut to get this right for Coeliac diners why is there no mention of how they’ll make it safe and suitable for us? Surely if you’d worked hard with a company you’d want to shout about it and encourage Coeliacs and their friends to try the new product?

Yet there was no mention in the Coeliac UK e-newsletter:

-  of how Pizza Hut will avoid cross contamination?

-  of how staff will be trained to ensure the GF pizza really is Gluten Free?

-  of the what Coeliac UK has done to help Pizza Hut take this product to market?

- of the price of the pizza?

- of how they trialled and perfected the base?

Hmmm. Strange? Are we just overly cautious?

Well it seemed not as on Sunday night we started to see a lot of chatter on gluten free social media channels saying they thought the whole thing was a hoax. Obviously these were non-Coeliac UK members who hadn’t read the newsletter and had just seen the rumours on various Coeliac Facebook groups. What piqued our interest was that many had called Pizza Hut and they had allegedly denied all knowledge of the GF pizza launch. Odd we thought.

PIZZA HUT UK:

Website

So we reviewed the Pizza Hut website today expecting to see a nice new update on how they cater for Coeliacs. Instead we found this on their section for catering for allergies, intolerances and good old Coeliacs:

Hmm. Odder and odder. It clearly states they have no plans to introduce the GF pizza. Yet why would the website state this yet Coeliac UK state they were?

Pizza Hut restaurants

We called three. Only one confirmed they knew of the launch and would be training staff this week about how to avoid cross contamination. They thought the GF pizzas would be the same prices as the ‘normal’ ones but couldn’t be sure yet.

Sounds like there was no soft launch of the product - let’s hope that a week of training helps the staff understand the seriousness of avoiding cross contamination.

Customer Services

We called Pizza Hut UK customer services (08447 700 669). They were very polite and helpful. They explained there were:

‘No plans to launch a gluten free pizza or cater for Coeliacs at the moment. If there were any menu changes we always get two weeks notice and would know.’

Stranger and stranger…

Pizza Hut Head Office

So we asked their Customer Services for Pizza Hut’s Head Office number so we could talk to their Press Office. Except it seemed they don’t have a press office and we were given another number to call to talk to their external PR agency.

Pizza Hut’s PR Agency

Here they confirmed the truth. Yes - at last!  We can confirm that Pizza Hut will indeed be launching a gluten free pizza on the 8th of October. But the PR agency had been left in the dark and hadn’t been made aware that Coeliac UK were publishing the story so soon. So that was why there seemed to be conflicting information.

Here’s what The Grocer, the industry food mag says about the new pizza launch. The link is here and here’s a ‘food porn’ pic from their PR push:

*Note: Nice pic - but still no substance in the Grocer article on how they will ‘woo’ us and ensure we can eat safely without being contaminated with gluten. Maybe those details are still being decided or maybe they don’t consider that sexy copy for non-coeliac readers?

To be continued…

So sadly we can’t tell you how much the pizza will be, how they’ll avoid cross contamination, what toppings you can have, whether it will be available via take-away as well (wouldn’t that be handy?!), whether they’re created in a separate section of their kitchens. But rest assured that as soon as we know - we’ll let you know!

As regular readers of our blog know we only share news once we’ve verified it and review products we’ve tried and loved. Otherwise - well - what would be the point? We’d just create confusion and you wouldn’t want to read our blogs would you?

So Guerrillas - look out for our updates on this and keep your fingers crossed that on the 8th you can enjoy a truly gluten free pizza, suitable for coeliacs!

What do you think?

Do you welcome chains creating gluten free options? Do you trust they train their staff to avoid cross contamination? Or do you think such GF options are aimed at gluten intolerant people and ‘gym bunnies’ jumping on the GF ‘trend’?

Do you believe that if a company is really serious about catering for the coeliac/ gluten free community that they’ll they do their best to engage with them and ensure their communication is joined up?

Would you love to eat a GF Pizza Hut pizza? Would your child? Let us know your thoughts..

Keep well and Gluten Free,

The Guerrillas
